Sustainability is about planning for the longer term for the benefit of ALL! Rich and poor! Sustainable development is about bringing environmental and social concerns into the economic process.
Unfortunately, economic policies today are not about public interest in the long term, but rather the pursuit of short-term economic gain – unhindered by limitations.
Across the western world, both science and religion have fostered the belief that humans are superior to nature.
This perception has laid the technical and moral foundation for the unprecedented exploitation of our natural resources.
Earth's capital stock of resources is being used up at a rate that will soon (if not already) be greater that her capacity to generate them.
This process is further fuelled the ongoing quest for economic growth.
The belief that unfettered economic growth enhances the quality of life for all, underlies much of contemporary economic policies.
Yet is becoming abundantly clear that the economic growth policies themselves contribute to poverty and starvation, especially in 3 rd world countries.
The pursuit of economic growth is what promotes and drives our mass-consumer culture. Which in turn, drives industries to exploit our natural resources on the one hand, while creating DEVASTATING pollution on the other.
